Earthquakes are when the ground shakes rather violently from plate tectonics colliding.
Earthquakes are measured on the Richter Scale. If the earthquake is less than 4, it was a small quake with minimum damage. Around 5, structural damage can occur. The largest earthquake was a 9.5 which was extremely devastating. The picture shows the result of the largest earthquake recorded. The colors represent the tsunamis wave heights because of the quake. The Richter scale is given a number from seismographs. These measure ground movements. August 24, 2014, a 6.0 earthquake occurred from San Francisco to Napa Valley California. There was a great deal of damage to the bay area. This was the largest in San Francisco in 25 years. California is located on a fault line so earthquakes are very common. |
